Allow all students to shine with rich tasks that support individual problem-solving and promote mathematical discourse through Rough Draft Talk. Explore how sharing math authority raises students’ math status as they own their thinking and share strategies, and experience how hearing from all class members allows us to explicitly expand on what is valued in the math classroom. Participants will collaborate on a task, share “rough draft” ideas mid-solution, then revise their thinking on the spot from contributions that deepen understanding. Our session focuses on the use of rehearsals, a space of decreased complexity within professional learning to try out pedagogical moves. We share four teachers, from grades 6-11, who rehearsed mathematical language routines (MLRs), specifically the MLR Collect & Display, during Studio Day professional learning. During our session, we will provide an overview of Collect & Display and the use of rehearsals before sharing teachers’ rehearsals of Collect & Display and how the use of these rehearsals allowed teachers to work in community to catalyze their instruction through sharing instruction, reflecting on that instruction, and continuing to revise that instruction.

Based on an activity from a youth participatory action research (YPAR) collaboration, we invite participants to engage in mixed-media arts creation that allows for reflection on relationships, community, and our roles to support “rooting mathematics in humanity”. Using a set of prompts and individually/collectively, participants will be invited to create individual art pieces (tessarae) to become part of a larger wall-sized public community mosaic. Using sticky notes and a pair-share, participants will consider how expressing needs, desires and hopes (rather than ‘norms) as individuals and as a community might spur reimagining and action toward rooting mathematics in humanity.

How can you help start and sustain an ambitious and equitable mathematics program in your school? In ambitious mathematics programs, (a) the curriculum uses nonroutine, discipline-aligned tasks, (b) teachers elicit and respond to student thinking, (c) the classroom environment positions students as mathematical authorities, and (d) equity is an overriding focus. In this interactive session, participants will engage in a discussion using an interactive model and discussion guides developed from a case study of an urban school that developed and implemented an ambitious mathematics program. The model is not prescriptive, but rather, is designed to spark reflection and inspire action.

In this interactive session participants will learn about Social Justice Mathematics considering how to attend to students’ emotions and well-being. The three women of Color facilitators collaborated on a Social Justice Mathematics project and include a mathematics teacher educator, a mathematics coach and doctoral student, and a mathematics middle school teacher and doctoral student. Participants will engage with a Social Justice Mathematics task in small groups, learn about SJM frameworks and resources, and then join grade band specific groups to discuss possible SJM tasks for their specific contexts. Mathematics as a school subject is a cultural product developed by generations of mathematicians. The conventions we teach—the symbols we privilege, the names we memorialize, and the algorithms we call “standard”—are culturally constructed and historically exclusive. By uncritically reproducing these conventions, we risk reinforcing an epistemology that denies students’ cultural and intellectual identities. This session introduces a framework that organizes mathematical conventions into seven categories and invites participants to acknowledge their origins, examine their rationales, and explore non-Western alternatives through interactive tasks that involve unpacking, breaking, and reimagining familiar conventions in mathematics teaching and learning.

Today’s world is data-driven, and data literacy is foundational for student success, agency, and civic participation. This interactive session immerses participants in community-rooted data investigations that position multilingual learners and historically marginalized students as mathematical sense-makers. Using the cycle Wonder → Collect/Curate → Represent → Interpret → Act, we model data talks, accessible representations (tally tables, dot plots, bar graphs), and bilingual language supports that connect mathematics to family and neighborhood contexts. Attendees leave with a planning template, prompts, scaffolds, and a quick rubric to launch within two weeks. This session aims to have teachers place students’ own worlds at the center of rigorous math learning.
