Building Trust and Co-Leadership: Frameworks for Parent–Teacher–Community Math Partnerships

This interactive session shares frameworks and activities from two parent–teacher–community partnership programs in Texas and Tennessee, both developed to catalyze change toward racial justice in elementary and secondary mathematics. We will share lessons learned from each program, highlighting how we shifted from parents attending events to parent-facilitated mathematics workshops, where parents determine the focus, lead decisions, and co-lead sessions with others. The discussion will focus on how relational trust was intentionally built (and what supported its development) and how workshop and school structures center families as co-learners and co-leaders, ensuring their expertise guides decision-making.

Explore how sharing math authority raises students’ math status as they own their thinking and share strategies, and experience how hearing from all class members allows us to explicitly expand on what is valued in the math classroom. Participants will be provided with various prompts/situations to brainstorm how a teacher might counteract the censure of 2SLGBTQIA+ identities using strategies of creative insubordination, both in locales that have adopted “Don’t Say Gay” or other anti-2SLGBTQIA+ laws and in those that have more protections in place for 2SLGBTQIA+ students.

We share four teachers, from grades 6-11, who rehearsed mathematical language routines (MLRs), specifically the MLR Collect & Display, during Studio Day professional learning. During our session, we will provide an overview of Collect & Display and the use of rehearsals before sharing teachers’ rehearsals of Collect & Display and how the use of these rehearsals allowed teachers to work in community to catalyze their instruction through sharing instruction, reflecting on that instruction, and continuing to revise that instruction.

Based on an activity from a youth participatory action research (YPAR) collaboration, we invite participants to engage in mixed-media arts creation that allows for reflection on relationships, community, and our roles to support “rooting mathematics in humanity”. Using a set of prompts and individually/collectively, participants will be invited to create individual art pieces (tessarae) to become part of a larger wall-sized public community mosaic. Using sticky notes and a pair-share, participants will consider how expressing needs, desires and hopes (rather than ‘norms) as individuals and as a community might spur reimagining and action toward rooting mathematics in humanity.

With collage materials, folded paper, and prompts, we’ll reflect on the past school year and dream forward into the next. Open to early childhood through secondary educators and preservice teachers, this session invites us to challenge oppressive narratives, honor our journeys, and imagine what it means to root mathematics in humanity. As a cohort of Chicago-based mathematics public school teachers and academics, we hope to offer insights in our particular lived experiences during the 25-26 school year as one of the most targeted places in the nation by ICE and the federal government. How can you help start and sustain an ambitious and equitable mathematics program in your school? In ambitious mathematics programs, (a) the curriculum uses nonroutine, discipline-aligned tasks, (b) teachers elicit and respond to student thinking, (c) the classroom environment positions students as mathematical authorities, and (d) equity is an overriding focus. In this interactive session, participants will engage in a discussion using an interactive model and discussion guides developed from a case study of an urban school that developed and implemented an ambitious mathematics program. While tiered intervention is one tool for supporting students struggling to demonstrate proficiency, there is often a lot more we can do in Tier 1 to make math more accessible and engaging for all students. We share how teachers can create a richer, more accessible math experience for all by designing for alternate means of expression–that is, having students engage with math ideas and demonstrate understanding via a variety of options that align with their strengths, abilities, and preferences and leverage their own mathematical, cultural, linguistic, and community-based funds of knowledge.

In this interactive session participants will learn about Social Justice Mathematics considering how to attend to students’ emotions and well-being. The three women of Color facilitators collaborated on a Social Justice Mathematics project and include a mathematics teacher educator, a mathematics coach and doctoral student, and a mathematics middle school teacher and doctoral student. Participants will engage with a Social Justice Mathematics task in small groups, learn about SJM frameworks and resources, and then join grade band specific groups to discuss possible SJM tasks for their specific contexts. Participants will receive a Google Drive folder of sample tasks and resources.
