Elevating Student Status with Rough Draft Talk
Thursday June 25, 2026 9:00am - 10:30am PDT
Allow all students to shine with rich tasks that support individual problem-solving and promote mathematical discourse through Rough Draft Talk. Explore how sharing math authority raises students’ math status as they own their thinking and share strategies, and experience how hearing from all class members allows us to explicitly expand on what is valued in the math classroom. Participants will collaborate on a task, share “rough draft” ideas mid-solution, then revise their thinking on the spot from contributions that deepen understanding. They will leave with a tool to promote a culture that honors mistakes as a valuable part of learning.

Rooting Math in Our Communities: Using Data to Design Relevant and Engaging High School Lessons
Thursday June 25, 2026 9:00am - 10:30am PDT
Data drives decisions across economics, health, and sports—yet marginalized communities are often excluded. This session shows how our math classrooms can change that. Experience a community-rooted, data-rich approach for Integrated Math 1–3 and Ethnic Stats. We share sample tasks (investment modeling, UCSF Health Atlas scatterplots, and analyzing school funding) and vetted resources, then help you design statistics activities using locally relevant datasets. Leave with plan-ready materials and strategies that help students see themselves—and their communities—in mathematics and in the data-driven decisions shaping their world.

Bridging Language and Mathematics: Supporting Multilingual Learners Through Linguistically Sustaining Instruction
Thursday June 25, 2026 10:45am - 11:45am PDT
Mathematics and language are deeply connected, making intentional, linguistically sustaining instruction essential for multilingual learners (MLLs). This session explores how educators can unpack the linguistic complexity of mathematics to create inclusive, equitable learning environments where every student’s language and reasoning are valued. Participants will explore practical strategies to support simultaneous language and mathematical development and leave with actionable tools to strengthen sensemaking, discourse, and engagement for all students.

Using Rehearsals to Create Community and Understanding Around Mathematical Language Routines
Thursday June 25, 2026 10:45am - 11:45am PDT
Our session focuses on the use of rehearsals, a space of decreased complexity within professional learning to try out pedagogical moves. We share four teachers, from grades 6-11, who rehearsed mathematical language routines (MLRs), specifically the MLR Collect & Display, during Studio Day professional learning. During our session, we will provide an overview of Collect & Display and the use of rehearsals before sharing teachers’ rehearsals of Collect & Display and how the use of these rehearsals allowed teachers to work in community to catalyze their instruction through sharing instruction, reflecting on that instruction, and continuing to revise that instruction.

Art for Community and Action: Math Educators Cultivating Joy and Solidarity Through Creation
Thursday June 25, 2026 12:45pm - 1:45pm PDT
In this hands-on session, educators will make reflective zines as a creative way to think about their math teaching practices. With collage materials, folded paper, and prompts, we’ll reflect on the past school year and dream forward into the next. Open to early childhood through secondary educators and preservice teachers, this session invites us to challenge oppressive narratives, honor our journeys, and imagine what it means to root mathematics in humanity. As a cohort of Chicago-based mathematics public school teachers and academics, we hope to offer insights in our particular lived experiences during the 25-26 school year as one of the most targeted places in the nation by ICE and the federal government. We particularly invite trans and queer teachers, teachers of color, and disabled teachers and those who occupy the margins to consider coming to this space.

Embracing Co-Teaching Models for Inclusive Mathematics Learning
Thursday June 25, 2026 12:45pm - 1:45pm PDT
This session focuses on the power of co-teaching between mathematics teachers and special education teachers in fostering inclusive and rigorous learning environments for all students, regardless of their disability status. In this session, we highlight the potential of different co-teaching models as tools to honor students’ diverse learning needs, language backgrounds, and cultural identities in math classes. Participants will engage in reflecting on their co-teaching experiences, constructing an overview of six co-teaching models, and discussing the ways that co-teaching can promote access, rigor, and inclusion for students.

Making Math Meaningful, Relevant, and Just for our Students
Thursday June 25, 2026 12:45pm - 1:45pm PDT
How can we root mathematics in humanity so that every learner finds meaning and belonging?
Can a math lesson spark curiosity, agency, and social change all at once?
Join this interactive session to explore strategies for making math meaningful, relevant, and socially conscious. Participants will learn how to integrate technology, real-life contexts, and social justice into mathematics instruction while using the Culturally Responsive-Sustaining STEAM Curriculum Scorecard to reflect on their own practices. Through engaging collaboration and analysis of Illustrative Mathematics lessons, attendees will leave equipped with concrete tools, such as math lesson examples incorporating social justice topics, and the following steps to center student identity, community, and justice in math learning, which fulfills TODOS’ mission of mathematics for all through purposeful, equity-driven teaching.

Building and Sustaining Ambitious Mathematics Programs: A Discussion Guide for Inspiring Action
Thursday June 25, 2026 2:00pm - 3:30pm PDT
How can you help start and sustain an ambitious and equitable mathematics program in your school? In ambitious mathematics programs, (a) the curriculum uses nonroutine, discipline-aligned tasks, (b) teachers elicit and respond to student thinking, (c) the classroom environment positions students as mathematical authorities, and (d) equity is an overriding focus. In this interactive session, participants will engage in a discussion using an interactive model and discussion guides developed from a case study of an urban school that developed and implemented an ambitious mathematics program. The model is not prescriptive, but rather, is designed to spark reflection and inspire action.

Revealing the Mathematical Brilliance of All Students Through Universal Design
Thursday June 25, 2026 2:00pm - 3:30pm PDT
While tiered intervention is one tool for supporting students struggling to demonstrate proficiency, there is often a lot more we can do in Tier 1 to make math more accessible and engaging for all students. We share how teachers can create a richer, more accessible math experience for all by designing for alternate means of expression–that is, having students engage with math ideas and demonstrate understanding via a variety of options that align with their strengths, abilities, and preferences and leverage their own mathematical, cultural, linguistic, and community-based funds of knowledge.
