Building Thinking Classrooms for ALL Students: Why Equity Needs Accessibility
Thursday June 25, 2026 9:00am - 10:30am PDT
Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) has gained widespread adoption in mathematics education. However, uncritical implementation can harm students TODOS seeks to serve, particularly marginalized populations, such as disabled and English Language learners. This session addresses TODOS's mission to advance equitable, high-quality mathematics education by examining how instructional practices associated with BTC can inadvertently marginalize students.

Building Trust and Co-Leadership: Frameworks for Parent–Teacher–Community Math Partnerships
Thursday June 25, 2026 9:00am - 10:30am PDT
This interactive session shares frameworks and activities from two parent–teacher–community partnership programs in Texas and Tennessee, both developed to catalyze change toward racial justice in elementary and secondary mathematics. We will share lessons learned from each program, highlighting how we shifted from parents attending events to parent-facilitated mathematics workshops, where parents determine the focus, lead decisions, and co-lead sessions with others. The discussion will focus on how relational trust was intentionally built (and what supported its development) and how workshop and school structures center families as co-learners and co-leaders, ensuring their expertise guides decision-making.

Culturally Responsive Mathematics Teaching: Cultivando Alegría, Curiosidad, y Justicia
Thursday June 25, 2026 9:00am - 10:30am PDT
How do we make mathematics learning and teaching more meaningful and joyous? In this session, we will introduce a culturally responsive mathematics teaching framework designed to reclaim mathematics as a humanizing and justice-focused activity, cultivando curiosidad, creatividad y libertad para estudiantes, familias, y docentes. We will show examples of these practices in action through community-based mathematical modeling tasks/tareas and routines/rutinas as elementary students make meaningful mathematical connections to themselves, their families, and communities. Take action and be inspired! ¡Inspírate a tomar acción! Planning resources (en inglés y algunos en español) will be available.

Digital Mathematics Storytelling for Building Mathematical Communities
Thursday June 25, 2026 9:00am - 10:30am PDT
Experience Digital Mathematics Storytelling (DMST) as a transformative approach that centers family and community knowledge in mathematics education. Through our storycircle protocol, participants will share mathematical narratives from their own families and communities, experiencing how collective storytelling challenges deficit perspectives and builds mathematical identity. Drawing from NSF-funded research with immigrant communities, this session demonstrates how DMST advances equitable mathematics education by positioning students’ home languages, cultural knowledge, and lived experiences as powerful mathematical resources. Participants will leave with concrete tools for implementing storycircles that honor the mathematical wealth already present in students’ families and communities, TODOS en comunidad.

Elevating Student Status with Rough Draft Talk
Thursday June 25, 2026 9:00am - 10:30am PDT
Allow all students to shine with rich tasks that support individual problem-solving and promote mathematical discourse through Rough Draft Talk. Explore how sharing math authority raises students’ math status as they own their thinking and share strategies, and experience how hearing from all class members allows us to explicitly expand on what is valued in the math classroom. Participants will collaborate on a task, share “rough draft” ideas mid-solution, then revise their thinking on the spot from contributions that deepen understanding. They will leave with a tool to promote a culture that honors mistakes as a valuable part of learning.

Connecting Through Primary Sources: Creating Routes With Mathematics and Between Ourselves
Thursday June 25, 2026 10:45am - 11:45am PDT
Artifacts made by people throughout history (including you, today!) can help us understand both mathematics and mathematics education. We’ll examine some of these primary sources – from the Library of Congress, from the contents of our own suitcases, and from the city around us – and seek connections to each other, to our students and their families, and to mathematics. These connections will provide us with routes to continued conversation outside of this conference, and pathways that our students can use to take action in their world.

A Mosaic of Needs, Desires, and Hopes: Creating en Comunidad to Cultivate Action in Mathematics Education
Thursday June 25, 2026 11:15am - 11:45am PDT
Based on an activity from a youth participatory action research (YPAR) collaboration, we invite participants to engage in mixed-media arts creation that allows for reflection on relationships, community, and our roles to support “rooting mathematics in humanity”. Using a set of prompts and individually/collectively, participants will be invited to create individual art pieces (tessarae) to become part of a larger wall-sized public community mosaic. Using sticky notes and a pair-share, participants will consider how expressing needs, desires and hopes (rather than ‘norms) as individuals and as a community might spur reimagining and action toward rooting mathematics in humanity.

Building and Sustaining Ambitious Mathematics Programs: A Discussion Guide for Inspiring Action
Thursday June 25, 2026 2:00pm - 3:30pm PDT
How can you help start and sustain an ambitious and equitable mathematics program in your school? In ambitious mathematics programs, (a) the curriculum uses nonroutine, discipline-aligned tasks, (b) teachers elicit and respond to student thinking, (c) the classroom environment positions students as mathematical authorities, and (d) equity is an overriding focus. In this interactive session, participants will engage in a discussion using an interactive model and discussion guides developed from a case study of an urban school that developed and implemented an ambitious mathematics program. The model is not prescriptive, but rather, is designed to spark reflection and inspire action.
