Building Trust and Co-Leadership: Frameworks for Parent–Teacher–Community Math Partnerships
Thursday June 25, 2026 9:00am - 10:30am PDT
This interactive session shares frameworks and activities from two parent–teacher–community partnership programs in Texas and Tennessee, both developed to catalyze change toward racial justice in elementary and secondary mathematics. We will share lessons learned from each program, highlighting how we shifted from parents attending events to parent-facilitated mathematics workshops, where parents determine the focus, lead decisions, and co-lead sessions with others. The discussion will focus on how relational trust was intentionally built (and what supported its development) and how workshop and school structures center families as co-learners and co-leaders, ensuring their expertise guides decision-making.

Culturally Responsive Mathematics Teaching: Cultivando Alegría, Curiosidad, y Justicia
Thursday June 25, 2026 9:00am - 10:30am PDT
How do we make mathematics learning and teaching more meaningful and joyous? In this session, we will introduce a culturally responsive mathematics teaching framework designed to reclaim mathematics as a humanizing and justice-focused activity, cultivando curiosidad, creatividad y libertad para estudiantes, familias, y docentes. We will show examples of these practices in action through community-based mathematical modeling tasks/tareas and routines/rutinas as elementary students make meaningful mathematical connections to themselves, their families, and communities. Take action and be inspired! ¡Inspírate a tomar acción! Planning resources (en inglés y algunos en español) will be available.

Place-based Image Talks: Culturally Relevant Teaching through Community Connections and Opportunities for Critical Conversations
Thursday June 25, 2026 10:45am - 11:15am PDT
Are you looking for ways to incorporate students’ funds of knowledge into your teaching through culturally relevant pedagogy? Would you like to incorporate more mathematical discourse and student thinking in your elementary or middle school math lessons? Place-based Image Talks do both! In a Place-based Image Talk, teachers use a local image to pose mathematical questions, increasing entry points into the conversation and helping all students see themselves within mathematics. Place-based Image Talks can also be used to empower students by providing opportunities to use mathematics to understand and agentically connect with local community issues.

Bridging Language and Mathematics: Supporting Multilingual Learners Through Linguistically Sustaining Instruction
Thursday June 25, 2026 10:45am - 11:45am PDT
Mathematics and language are deeply connected, making intentional, linguistically sustaining instruction essential for multilingual learners (MLLs). This session explores how educators can unpack the linguistic complexity of mathematics to create inclusive, equitable learning environments where every student’s language and reasoning are valued. Participants will explore practical strategies to support simultaneous language and mathematical development and leave with actionable tools to strengthen sensemaking, discourse, and engagement for all students.

Art for Community and Action: Math Educators Cultivating Joy and Solidarity Through Creation
Thursday June 25, 2026 12:45pm - 1:45pm PDT
In this hands-on session, educators will make reflective zines as a creative way to think about their math teaching practices. With collage materials, folded paper, and prompts, we’ll reflect on the past school year and dream forward into the next. Open to early childhood through secondary educators and preservice teachers, this session invites us to challenge oppressive narratives, honor our journeys, and imagine what it means to root mathematics in humanity. As a cohort of Chicago-based mathematics public school teachers and academics, we hope to offer insights in our particular lived experiences during the 25-26 school year as one of the most targeted places in the nation by ICE and the federal government. We particularly invite trans and queer teachers, teachers of color, and disabled teachers and those who occupy the margins to consider coming to this space.

Embracing Co-Teaching Models for Inclusive Mathematics Learning
Thursday June 25, 2026 12:45pm - 1:45pm PDT
This session focuses on the power of co-teaching between mathematics teachers and special education teachers in fostering inclusive and rigorous learning environments for all students, regardless of their disability status. In this session, we highlight the potential of different co-teaching models as tools to honor students’ diverse learning needs, language backgrounds, and cultural identities in math classes. Participants will engage in reflecting on their co-teaching experiences, constructing an overview of six co-teaching models, and discussing the ways that co-teaching can promote access, rigor, and inclusion for students.

From Reflection to Action: Using Teachers’ Stories to Build Inclusive Elementary Mathematics Classrooms
Thursday June 25, 2026 12:45pm - 1:45pm PDT
This interactive session invites participants to use teachers’ stories as tools for reflection on how instructional decisions shape students’ mathematical identities. Drawing on research in identity and equity in mathematics education, participants will collaboratively analyze two 5th-grade classroom stories that reveal instructional dilemmas involving language and culture. Through discussions, participants will critique instances of deficit thinking, consider alternative pedagogical approaches, and explore strategies that affirm students as capable mathematical thinkers. The session concludes with resources and actionable next steps for building networks of critical friends to sustain equity-focused reflection and foster inclusive, identity-affirming mathematics learning environments.

Humanizing and Joyful Math Intervention: Healing Math Identity for Students (and Teachers)
Thursday June 25, 2026 2:00pm - 3:30pm PDT
Why does so much math intervention perpetuate systemic issues? Come imagine with us mathematics intervention that builds on students’ mathematical strengths, leverages high demand cognitive tasks, and elevates student thinking while building students’ confidence as doers of mathematics. And it’s fun! In this session we share the stories, data, and experiences from two of our district partners implementing this model for math intervention. Come learn what all the JOY is about!
